DMDK party leader Vijayakanth and nearly 500 party cadres were arrested by police on Wednesday at Koyambedu for forming a human chain without permission, as part of the anti-liquor protests currently raging across the state.
The incident took place between 4.20 p.m. and 4.35 p.m. City police prevented them from forming the human chain but Vijayakanth and the cadres persisted with the protest and were picked up.Traffic was affected at Koyambedu and surrounding areas for about 20 minutes.
The DMDK had earlier moved the Madras High Court, seeking permission for the protest, but it was not given due to concerns about traffic.
Vijayakant brother-in-law L.K. Sudhish was also arrested, along with more party cadres at Aminjikarai for trying to form the human chain.
They were picked up and taken to Lakshmi Kalyana Mandapam, Nerkundram and are still in custody.
