Dhaka: A blogger was hacked to death in Bangladesh on Friday, the fourth killing of an online critic of religious extremism in the Muslim-majority country in less than six months. Niloy Neel, who was an activist and blogger, was murdered in his house on Friday by five assailants.
Niloy Chowdhury who ran his Facebook page as Niloy Neel was found dead after at least five assailants posing as potential tenants looking for accommodation entered the house in Dhakas Gotan area and killed him, said officier-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station, Mustafizur Rahman.
Neel name was Niloy Chowdhury, but he used the former name in the blogging community.Chowdhury was known to his friends as a secular blogger. His friends say it was unbelievable that he was targeted.
The killing on Friday was the fourth this year after a Bangladeshi-American blogger was hacked to death in February in a deadly attack on the Dhaka University campus.
The page also suggests that he was part of the Science and Rationalist Association of Bangladesh.
His friends and relatives expressed shock, evident by their posts on his Facebook page.After the news of his murder spread, one of his friends wrote on Chowdhury Facebook timeline that You would not be forgotten. Another wrote: Dada (brother), I can not believe, you are no more.
They were attacked in Dhaka after leaving a book fair.
